How the pattern works
The clues are examples. The answer is the set name. Espresso, cortado, macchiato, flat white: the answer names that family in whatever level of breadth the game accepts that day, often the plain headword.
Related shape: Things Associated With. There the clues only orbit the topic; they are not necessarily members. A ballot is not a type of boxing. If every clue can honestly say it is a kind of the answer, you are in Types Of.
Pinpoint likes category answers that a teacher could write at the top of a worksheet without stretching. Too broad and the game rejects it. Too narrow and clue five sits outside the fence. The honest middle is the whole skill.
Recognition tips
Ask the teacher question: what single word goes at the top of this list? Write three options, not one. Usually the second or third draft is the width the game wants.
If the clues already feel like a grocery list or a syllabus line, you are close. Grocery lists and syllabus lines are category puzzles with the header erased.
Watch for subtypes. Coffee, coffee drinks, hot drinks, and beverages are four different widths. Test which one still includes every clue without inventing a sixth.
Common traps
Meta-words never win: thing, item, stuff, object, category. The game wants a word people actually use.
Choosing a subtype that drops a clue. If four clues are pasta shapes and one is risotto, maybe the answer is broader Italian food or rice dishes depending on how the fifth was written. Re-read the odd clue before you narrow or widen.
Confusing associated with types. If one clue is not a member but merely related, flip to the associated pattern and treat the answer as the topic center instead of the set name.

Open a category page on this site, pick three puzzles, and guess only the pattern before you open the answer. Types Of will show up often in food, sports, and entertainment sets because those worlds are full of clean subtypes.
When you miss, note whether you were too broad or too narrow. That one-bit feedback corrects category width faster than another article about categories.
